Organic Weekend

I don't know about you, but buying organic is important to me. I feel very strongly about keeping as many pesticides out of my kiddos bodies as I can. We already live in a city with lots of chemicals and pollutants about, so I do what I can--you know how it is. So imagine my dismay when I read this.

There's lots of disturbing stuff in there, but here's my takeaway--the peanut factory that's at the root of all the salmonella brouhaha was certified organic! And perhaps even more disturbing to me is the fact that companies pay certifiers to inspect them. How does that make sense? I've always heard that there was a stringent process in becoming certified... but I had no idea it had such a possibility for corruption. I knew enough to know that organic wouldn't necessarily mean safe from pathogens/germs/contamination, but I thought there was at least some heightened integrity in the system. Good grief.

So out of this frustration comes my deeper commitment to a goal I'd already set for '09: to grow as much of my own food as possible. I've got the compost bin; the compost pail is on it's way, the first seeds are taking root as we speak, and I'm even more committed than before. I'm using this book--which will allow me to grow a lot of stuff in not a lot of space.

I was pretty determined to do this, darn tootin' I will now--I'm mad! (Can you tell?)
see? my corn is already poking through. take that, food safety standards.

So. Where will you find me this weekend? Getting things ready for my garden, y'all. I'll make sure to post more pictures as it comes along--hopefully I'll have something to show for all my work (and fuming).

Say it with me now...

My husband works for WSB-TV--That's Channel 2 for those of you who watch TV in Atlanta. That's why he's Action News Dave here on the Sugar Buzz (well, and because Jessica is also married to a Dave. We're just trying not to confuse you). Anyway, that means he always knows what's going on in weather land. It's nice, in a way. I ask him what's shakin' for the weekend and he can sidle up to Glenn Burns and find out for me.

But since he gets called in or has to stay late whenever there is severe weather, there's a downside to that. In particular, it's not so nice when the forecast is this:

SNOW people. On Sunday. In March. In ATLANTA. And not like, Blairsville or Helen. In THE CITY.

Okay, everybody, I don't know how to do a no-snow-dance, but I'll make it up. You do it, too. Then we can all move on and get to spring. Which is way nicer than this gray muck called winter that's been hanging around the last few months.

All together now...
Noooooooo snoooooooooooooooow!

Weekend Forecast Wednesday

I like to plan ahead. By Wednesday, I'm thinking about what kind of fun we'll be having on Saturday. Okay, that's not true. I actually start thinking about that on Monday, about five seconds after Action News Dave leaves for work. Anyway, my friend Tina sent me a sweet tidbit today--
They are making the Velveteen Rabbit into a movie and it opens this weekend! It is playing at a few Atlanta-area theaters this week and opening at more next week. My Ada has yet to go to a movie in the theater AND the grandparentals are coming into town this weekend. So... I'm thinking a date is in order.

I'm also excited about the live theatre version of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. It's being produced by Atlanta's Synchronicty theatre. I'm pretty sure there's not a cuter book out there, so sign me up!

If sports is more your thing--the Harlem Globetrotters are at the Gwinnett Arena Sunday. Fun. That sounds like funfunfun to me.

Happy weekend planning!
