Daddy's Girls

I had the chance last week to photograph one of my favorite families. Amy and Vinnie often put me up in their adorable house, cook wonderful homey meals for me, and keep my kids entertained with their children, chicken, and toys. In return, I try to take a few pictures of their beautiful family. Here are some I took during my recent trip to see them.

Their baby Claire has grown sooooo much since I last saw them. She is still a cutie, though.Emma doesn't love the camera, but she does seem to like me, so we had some fun.
I love this one of her... it shows the sweet mischief behind that angelic face.
Sisters. And goofballs.
Even goofier-balls.
Catherine, on the other hand, is a complete ham. Here's her serious face.
Hiding...
And just looking gorgeous.
Vinnie needed a couple of pictures of himself, but Claire wanted him to hold him, so they put on twin grins for me:
And here's just Vinnie... You can tell where the girls learned to make mischief, right?
Sadly I did not get any pictures of Amy while I was there. She's beautiful, inside and out, though. I promise.

The Sweet Spot-Balance Atlanta Family Chiropractic

Our Sweet Spot for today is a bright, cheery place on Pharr Road in Buckhead where childhood and health are celebrated. Dr. Caroline von Fluegge of Balance Atlanta Family Chiropractic has been adjusting me since I was pregnant with my first child, and she started adjusting both my kids when they were just days old. I think it’s one reason they are so healthy—between the two of them and their combined 5 years of life they’ve had one ear infection and three colds. Not bad, I say, not bad at all. She is really amazing--I’ve also met other patients who just gush over how much healthier they and their kids are since they’ve been seeing her. Oh, and if you’re afraid of the snap-crackle-pop of chiropractic, don’t be—Dr. C is gentle, gentle, gentle. A kid’s adjustment consists of no more pressure than the light push of a finger.
Dr. Caroline von Fluegge. She can make your spine happy.

I had a few questions for Dr. C about what she does and why, and here’s what she had to say:

Lindsay: Why do you enjoy working with pregnant women and children?

Dr. C: Moms are open to doing what it takes to remain comfortable, pain-free and active throughout those precious 9-months and beyond. With a well-aligned spine and pelvis, labor and delivery are easier on both mother and baby. I like being part of a mom’s team as we enjoy the miracle of ushering a new life into the world! The kids in my office kindle my goofiness and remind me to enjoy simple pleasures. I would rather listen to a child sing the B-I-N-G-O song at the top of her lungs than to hear an adult complain about traffic! Also, if the legacy I leave behind is a generation of kids who have an understanding of what true health really is, then I am helping make this world a more balanced place to thrive in the future.
This chair is comfy and cute, like the rest of Dr. C's office.

Lindsay: Thanks for that. I appreciate that you have realistic expectations of how a kid acts. Your office is also super-kid friendly and has some unique items in it. Tell me about it.

Dr. C: My mother died of cancer 7 years ago. Her colorful living room rug is in the kid’s play area beneath the toy chest. Mom had the best sense of humor, she loved kids, her laughter was infectious, and her kind words were filled with compassion and wisdom. The rug reminds me to embrace what mom taught me. It kindles a spark of connection with each person I touch personally and professionally.

You can see that rug in this picture, as well as the giant tiger that kids love to play with.

Lindsay: It’s a great rug. And a great toy chest too. What surprises people most about chiropractic care for kids?

Dr. C: As soon as they are old enough to walk, kids march up to the adjusting table, climb aboard, lie down, and giggle as I gently adjust them. When I finish, they give me a sticky kiss or hug and run to the toy chest to play. Later, parents report that their kids didn’t stop talking about Dr. C for the rest of the day. An adjustment for to a child isn’t a big deal, they trust me, and it’s fun. Most importantly, their parents understand the value of making sure their kids are growing properly and their nerve system is not stressed throughout all stages of development. After all, you bring your kids to the pediatric dentist as soon as those baby teeth make their appearance. Doesn’t it make sense to ensure a healthy spine from the get go? The kids who come here don't get ear infections, have regular bowel movements, sleep better, get sick less often. Having healthy kids means a more peaceful family life and that is worth a trip to Balance Atlanta!

Lindsay: Now you’re talking to the moms out there! We love to talk about poop! Okay, on a different note. It's Saturday and I am spying on you. What would I find Dr. C doing?

Dr. C: Wandering the aisles of Barnes & Noble in direct defiance of my self-imposed ban on buying even more books. Taking a spinning class thinking how great it is to rock out to loud music while shedding that pesky winter insulation lodged on my hips. Sipping a Starbucks London Fog (soy milk & Earl Grey Tea – sounds gross but it’s really quite good) watching the New York Times travel section video blog on line. Going to a dreaded mall under duress only because I have to buy my niece a birthday present. Figuring out which friends to round up for dinner somewhere cozy. Lying in my bed for a few extra minutes enjoying being horizontal.
rooster art!

Lindsay: You have lots of energy! I feel the need to lie down just thinking about all that. Speaking of energy, you once rode your bike a really, really long way. Why?

Dr. C: Call me Forrest Gump on a bike. Actually, I was at a fork in the road while working for an advertising agency in NYC. I could look the part, I could do the part, but I was unhappy in the corporate world. I finagled taking a six-week leave of absence to ride my bicycle from Seattle to New York. Somewhere in Montana, while the wind was whistling through my mind clearing out brain fog, I realized that a person can do anything they want in life provided they have the vision, guts and determination to go for it. This epiphany is what lead to my taking a leap of faith and making a 180% career change to chiropractic.

Lindsay: Glad you did! Tell me this: what’s on your kitchen table right now?

Dr. C: My iMac – There’s nothing wrong with Googling cool things or checking e-mails while waiting for water to boil, right? A book on the connection between acupuncture and neurology which is sitting on top of the current People Magazine – The ying and yang of being geeky and brainless keeps me in balance. A bar of dark chocolate – I am deeply suspicious of people who do not like chocolate. A laser pointer – My cat Comet, an expert in lounging, cannot resist doing wind sprints up and down the stairs trying to chase the red dot.

Lindsay: *laughs* You need to get that on video. Comet, I mean, not the boiling water. Hey, you see a lot of stressed out moms like me. You gave me really great advice once--"You can only do one thing at a time. Pick the most important one and do it." Got any other good advice for our SweetSnaps moms?

Dr. C: The next time you are about to take off on a plane, listen to the flight attendant’s instructions. You are told in case of an emergency you should put on your own oxygen mask first before putting on your children’s oxygen masks. What’s the point? How can you ensure the safety of your kids if you are without oxygen yourself? How in life are you going to be an effective mom, a loving spouse and a happy person if you do not fill up your own cup first? It’s not about being selfish. Rather, it’s about fortifying your own mental, physical, emotional and spiritual strength first so you can be effective on all fronts. This is where chiropractic care comes in handy - remove layers of stress from your nerve system and watch your mood improve!

Lindsay: Thanks. I'll see you soon to make sure all our oxygen masks. Thank you for being our Sweet Spot!
Dr. C: Thank you.

For your own tete-a-tete with Dr. C, go here.

Lindsay

Spring Showers=Cute Feetsies

Today was a dreary, rainy bleak day in Atlanta. On days like this, I like to wear something bright to cheer me up, and so today I thought about rain boots.

I think these are the funkiest little girl rain boots ever. So different--perfect for a budding fashionista. You can get them at westernchief.com.

And for the do-it-yourselfer--you can paint your own rainboots! Wouldn't that be a fun rainy-day activity? Paint the rainboots and wear them to splash in later! They can be had at ilovemydesign.com.

I thought this umbrella would brighten up someone's April showers, don't you? There is also a girlier version at giggle.com.

Check these out-the real deal fireman boots, also from westernchief.com.

And for the hot mamas out there--I looooooove these boots. They would almost make a dreary day tolerable, huh?

Happy splashing!

Lindsay

Li'l Engineer

I had a private shoot yesterday for baby Luke. Not a SweetSnaps party, but he's so cute I thought he was incredibly blog-worthy. He's a chunked out 6-month-old with plenty of chins & sweet baby rolls, but not a lot of smiles for me yesterday. Luckily his grandma and grandpa came along and lightened up his mood. Here are my two favorites:

I hope you are out there brightening some little one's mood today, too... or that some little one is making YOU smile!

Happy Birthday, Babs!

mmmmm.... pretty pink peeptoes. say that 3 times fast. AP Photo/Chris Pizzello.

And by Babs, of course I'm talking about Barbie! She is turning 50 and is having a fabulous bash Monday night at a Malibu home that has been turned into a real-life Barbie dreamhouse by Jonathan Adler. It's so pretty in pink! I love it! I think Barbie was the first style icon for many women of our generation, don't you? I mean, think what you want about her teeny-tiny, non-menstruating size, or the example she sets for our daughters, girl has some fashion sense. Anyway, check out the article on her house here, and wear a little pink Monday for our girl, will ya?barbie's living room. I LOVE that orange chair. photo courtesy the Associated Press. Organic Weekend

I don't know about you, but buying organic is important to me. I feel very strongly about keeping as many pesticides out of my kiddos bodies as I can. We already live in a city with lots of chemicals and pollutants about, so I do what I can--you know how it is. So imagine my dismay when I read this.

There's lots of disturbing stuff in there, but here's my takeaway--the peanut factory that's at the root of all the salmonella brouhaha was certified organic! And perhaps even more disturbing to me is the fact that companies pay certifiers to inspect them. How does that make sense? I've always heard that there was a stringent process in becoming certified... but I had no idea it had such a possibility for corruption. I knew enough to know that organic wouldn't necessarily mean safe from pathogens/germs/contamination, but I thought there was at least some heightened integrity in the system. Good grief.

So out of this frustration comes my deeper commitment to a goal I'd already set for '09: to grow as much of my own food as possible. I've got the compost bin; the compost pail is on it's way, the first seeds are taking root as we speak, and I'm even more committed than before. I'm using this book--which will allow me to grow a lot of stuff in not a lot of space.

I was pretty determined to do this, darn tootin' I will now--I'm mad! (Can you tell?)
see? my corn is already poking through. take that, food safety standards.

So. Where will you find me this weekend? Getting things ready for my garden, y'all. I'll make sure to post more pictures as it comes along--hopefully I'll have something to show for all my work (and fuming).

Dolcemente,
Lindsay

Say it with me now...

My husband works for WSB-TV--That's Channel 2 for those of you who watch TV in Atlanta. That's why he's Action News Dave here on the Sugar Buzz (well, and because Jessica is also married to a Dave. We're just trying not to confuse you). Anyway, that means he always knows what's going on in weather land. It's nice, in a way. I ask him what's shakin' for the weekend and he can sidle up to Glenn Burns and find out for me.

But since he gets called in or has to stay late whenever there is severe weather, there's a downside to that. In particular, it's not so nice when the forecast is this:

SNOW people. On Sunday. In March. In ATLANTA. And not like, Blairsville or Helen. In THE CITY.

Okay, everybody, I don't know how to do a no-snow-dance, but I'll make it up. You do it, too. Then we can all move on and get to spring. Which is way nicer than this gray muck called winter that's been hanging around the last few months.

All together now...
Noooooooo snoooooooooooooooow!

Dolcemente,
Lindsay

The Tooth Fairy would be impressed

Remember how excited you were when you lost your first tooth? I couldn't wait to place the tooth under my pillow and wait for the Tooth Fairy to make a visit. My son hasn't lost his first tooth yet, but I think that when he does, I may use this lovely pillows by Letter M Designs, an Etsy designer right out of Atlanta.

Weekend Forecast Wednesday

I like to plan ahead. By Wednesday, I'm thinking about what kind of fun we'll be having on Saturday. Okay, that's not true. I actually start thinking about that on Monday, about five seconds after Action News Dave leaves for work. Anyway, my friend Tina sent me a sweet tidbit today--
They are making the Velveteen Rabbit into a movie and it opens this weekend! It is playing at a few Atlanta-area theaters this week and opening at more next week. My Ada has yet to go to a movie in the theater AND the grandparentals are coming into town this weekend. So... I'm thinking a date is in order.

I'm also excited about the live theatre version of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. It's being produced by Atlanta's Synchronicty theatre. I'm pretty sure there's not a cuter book out there, so sign me up!

If sports is more your thing--the Harlem Globetrotters are at the Gwinnett Arena Sunday. Fun. That sounds like funfunfun to me.

Happy weekend planning!

Can I get a Who? Who?

photo courtesy of this crafty lady.

Jessica and I love the birds that are absolutely everywhere right now, from home decor to blogs to jewelry. But of course, we have been wondering what the next big nature-inspired decor craze will be. So. I, Lindsay, am going on the record with my prediction: Owls. I saw some gorgeous Owl Gear at Barnes and Noble the other day, and I am certain we'll be seeing owls everywhere. And yes, yes, I realize they are technically birds, but they are a very different and distinctive kind of bird, so I contend they are worthy of their own trend. Here's a few to get you started.

for your child's head!

owl pillow!

owl bag!

and if that's a little much for you...

or this one--vegan, too. who know? (get it? i said 'who?' i am on a roll, folks!)

make something yourself!

Owls. Yup. I'm bettin' on owls.

10 Questions: Jessica Interviews Lindsay

J: What did you want to be when you grew up?
L: A chef. I used to cook breakfast for my family on Saturday morning, and I would put up a fake ribbon over the kitchen door so no one could come in, then I would have a ribbon cutting when the food was ready. Like, 'Tada! Here's your breakfast, family!'
J: I think you should still do a ribbon cutting. Just cooking a healthy breakfast and getting it to the table calls for some pomp and circumstance in my household.

J: If you could own only three books, what would they be? Why?

L:The Bible. Cause how else would I know God?
The Joy of Cooking. Cause how else would I know how to cook?
I can't choose #3. This is too hard! Can I get a magazine subscription instead? Maybe to Martha Stewart or Mothering?
J: In my house, magazines count as quality reading material. So, yes, magazines count.

J: Heels or flats?
L: Heels. Flats make me feel frumpy. Even just a little kitten heel says "Hey, I tried."
J: Amen to that.

J: If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
L: New Zealand. Mountains. Ocean. Farmland. Kiwi. I think if I went there, I'd never have to vacation again. It just seems that amazing.
J: Now I am daydreaming about a trip to New Zealand.

J: How do you take your coffee?

L: Black, please.
J: I had a feeling you might say that.

J: When did you first know that we would be friends?
L: When you said you thought our photography styles were similar. It was such a compliment to me. I'm pretty much a sucker for a compliment. Then when we actually hung out more, and our children got along so well and you were so laid-back, it made me even more certain.
J: Aww...I should compliment you more often then. I like giving compliments just as much.

J: Do you have any special talents to get your subjects to loosen up during a photo shoot?
L: Talents? Hmmmmm... I like to make people laugh. I'm pretty funny and I can read people pretty quickly, so I can usually get a chuckle out of even the biggest curmudgeons.
J: That's a good talent to have.

J: If you could design your ideal day, what would you do?
L: Can I teleport around? Okay, good. Then I would get up early, take a hike on the Appalachian Trail and do some yoga. I'd go antiquing or yard sale-ing. Then I'd eat some sweet potato pancakes at Rise-N-Dine with that incredible Counter Culture coffee they serve. Can I have a nap? Thanks. I'd play with my girls and read them some stories, maybe do some coloring or a craft. I'd cook dinner for my family and some friends and eat it outside. I would put the little girlies to bed, I love sleepy kids. Then I'd go for a walk on the beach with my husband.
J: laughs. Teleport? Sure. You can do anything in an ideal day. I think you would need a nap with all that hiking and crafting.
